In a Far Country by John Taliaferro

Used. Paperback. When an 1897 early freeze traps eight whaling ships off the Alaskan coast, two hundred men face a frigid and fatal winter unless a miracle comes hoofing it through the snow. John Taliaferro brilliantly recounts the harrowing, heroic rescue mission wherein a intrepid missionary and native herders drove four hundred reindeer across seven hundred miles of untracked tundra. Beneath this frozen-tundra thriller lies the deeply personal odyssey of Tom and Ellen Lopp, whose remarkable life at the top of the world captures a vanishing frontier colliding with the twentieth century. It is a stunning slice of forgotten history that easily eclipses the gold rush drama of its era. Grab a blanket and plunge into the ice before these pages melt away.
